In June 1950, the United Nations sent military forces under U.S. command to support South Korea against the invasion by North Korea and China. France took part through an entirely volunteer unit, the French Battalion of the United Nations (BF/UN), with 1,034 volunteers landing in Busan in November 1950. Drawing on soldiers’ testimonies and focusing on the Battle of Jipyeong-ri, Hayoun Kwon highlights the human dimension of war, marked by suffering and daily fighting, but also by solidarity and friendship between French troops and Korean soldiers.
